Research- thriller openings

This is the opening to the crime thriller The Departed (Scorsese 2006), the opening begins with a description of the setting- 'Boston some years ago.' This is followed by a voice over and a historical montage of rebellious and violent clips. The only sound is the diagetic sound from the montage and the music is then faded in- 'Gimme shelter' by the Rolling stones. It is  very fitting as the song is partly about anger and violence. The lyrics are also quite negative and the guitar intro is brooding, creating a sense of rebellion and angst.
The character speaking is then introduced in complete silhouette, suggesting he is a very dark and mysterious. This then cuts to a shot of a shop and the mise-en-scene suggests it is set around the 1970s or 1980s. The music is continued throughout the following scene to show his character is the same throughout each time period and is also quite dark.

I looked at this opening as inspiration for our thriller opening, similarly to this clip, we hope to use constant background music as well as diagetic sound and dialogue. This is to suggest that our main character is quite dark and mysterious.
We also plan to make an opening about gangsters and hope to create a dark and dangerous feel about the main female character similarly to tension surrounding Jack Nicholson's character in this clip.
